Before and after (caution vegetarians)

There are pigs everywhere on Nuku'alofa. They wandered around the front of houses, little piglets scooted across roads and they seemed to cohabit well with the angry dogs who roam the street in packs. They also feature in Tongan feasts, complete with about 4 types of yam, the traditional raw marinated fish, octopus salad, chicken salad, potatoes ...the list could go on and on.

My favourite was Lū which is the edible leaves of the taro plant and is usually prepared for special occasions and especially on Sundays. The dish is chopped meat with coconut milk wrapped in a number of Taro leaves. This is then wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked in an oven, like the traditional umu to cook. The little piggy was good too.
